ジャズの歴史の中で最高の人気を誇るヴィブラフォン奏者。1923年に米国デトロイトで生まれ、7歳でピアノを学び、数年後にはヴァイブを演奏するようになった。ディジー・ガレスピーに才能を見出され彼のビッグ・バンドで活躍。チャーリー・パーカーやセロニアス・モンクらと共演を重ね、1946年にジョン・ルイスらとモダン・ジャズ・カルテット(MJQ)を結成。様々な層から受け入れられ、長年に渡り圧倒的人気を誇る。99年に死去するまで様々な名演を残した。 |
