アメリカ・インディアナ州生まれ。裕福な家庭に育ち、6歳からピアノとバイオリンを学び、10歳で初めて作曲をする。
その後ハーバード大学で法律を学ぶ。が、音楽の道を捨てがたく、NYの社交界の一員となり、ブロードウェイのショーを手がけるが失敗、1917年フランスへ。
そこでリンダと出会い、音楽の才能を開花させ栄光を手にすることとなる。
ミュージカルや映画音楽を担当し、洗練された作詞・作曲で次々とヒット作を生み出した。
音楽を担当した代表作は「Kiss Me Kate」「Anything Goes」（ミュージカル）、「上流社会」「昼も夜も」（映画）など。
約870曲にも及ぶ彼の作品は、現代のミュージシャンにも愛され、数多くのカバーやCM、TVで使用されている。
妻リンダが死去した後は、64年に生涯を終えるまで作曲をすることはなかった。

Be So Nice To Come Home Toは、1942年に制作されたコロムビア映画『サムシング・トゥ・シャウト・アバウト』の主題歌として書いた曲。この映画はまったくヒットしなかったらしい。
